Practicum:
Many opportunities to grow here this past week. After leaving Queenstown, we began on our backpacking trip on the Routeburn, a breath taking hike, one of our girls, Carry cut her hand and it was definitely a learning opportunity watching out for her during that time and throughout the rest of that particular trip. After getting off the Routeburn we took a ferry ride across the Milford Sound during a warm rainstorm... Yet as we were leaving the Milford Sound area, our snail of a van broke down. And everybody dealt with 'cranky time' beautifully during that time. Next was Wanaka, and I overcame my fear of mountain biking and had one of the most incredible days in NZed because of that ride. Sweet as... Ultimately, I feel that this trip is going by so fast that I haven't had enough time to process each day as it comes and goes, including all the places and activities we are seeing.
OAL 275:
As far as gruop facilitations are concerned I chose the Tao Knowing What is Happening to sum up our experiences together. "Do not strive to think things out", meaning you cannot think into past or future realms to understand what i shappening right now. To truly understand what is happening we cannot push, cannot over think a situation, or even over engage because that is ineffective. Just step back and release and soften your gaze to the situation rather than trying to understand so much with your mind. As do group proccesses, "Life's process unfolds naturally." Can't fight it.
OAL 375:
Once arriving to Sydney, we were assigned a partner from the group and given the opportunity to find our way to the hostel in whatever way we wished, as long as we got there. "Use what you have and be content where you are". I think this sum's up our experience (Ang and myself) finding our way to the hostel. We decided to take take our time looking for options around the airport and finally deciding on a train ride and a late night ferry ride back to the hostel. Things work out easily I have decided if you just give into it. "After all, Tao does nothing at all, yet everything gets done." So we went with the flow and had a great time even after hauling our bags 6 blocks to the hostel after getting off of the ferry at 11pm. Felt like an organic way of traveling and figuring it out ourselves. We haven't gotten the opportunity to figure out our own travel much on this trip and now I know what it feels like to go on our own schedule, rather than hurry up and wait for a group. This passage from the Tao represents our leader for the day that day... "Good leadership consists of motivatingpeople to their highest levels by offering them opporunities, not obligations. That is how things happen naturally. Life is an opportunity and not an obligation."
