OAL 250 Risky business......OAL 275 The Beauty of Abel Tasmen

OAL 250 blog 2

Read the Risk article and Reflect.

To me, this article reflects human and communication error. Accidents are prone to happen in every situation anywhere. In this circumstance the communication error cost a life after a 135 ft fall. The belayer should not have removed their belay device until all communication was in fact clear. However, for the widow to then sue everyone involved totaling up to $10 million is unfair.  Rock and ice climbing are dangerous sports and shit happens. It was not anyone persons fault that this happened, and when people are taking the risks of climbing on ice or rock or whatever sport, they need to be aware of the consequences of errors. However, that certainly does not stop incidents like this from occurring. Making sure that all communication is clear before making a move in such circumstances is important for the safety of everyone involved. Adventure individuals are putting themselves at risk when they are chasing the thrill of adventure. Accidents do happen along with human and communication error. Sueing these companies and people wont fix a broken leg, it wont fix what has alrady been done due to an accident.

Choose 3 chapters from the Tao that reflect motivation and development in Adventure Leadership students.

33. Inner Resources

This chapter motivates individuals to develop and use their inner resources.  It explains that It takes strength to manage others’ lives, but to manage your own takes true power. If one can learn to be content with what they have, they will develop joy in prosperity and free time. Learn to live simply and enjoy every lasting moment. Such a thing that sounds so easy can in fact be very difficult. However if goals are clear, achievement can be made easy. Motivation and development of your inner resources is key.

Free time during this trip has been rare. When we finally get the chance to have free time it seems like we don’t know what to do with ourselves. As we begin to develop an awareness of our inner resources we will be able to find the joys in simply doing nothing. We have a chance to step back and relax; to enjoy the outdoors and all its beauty. It truly is a beautiful thing just to do nothing at all occasionally.

44. Owning or being Owned

This chapter motivates individuals to live simply, and to avoid wanting more and more “things” in life. It involves developing an inner security with ourselves. “If you have inner security, you will have what you want anyway.” Societies are being over powered by thinking that we need all these materialistic things in our lives. But really it just complicates them.  The more people have, the more they have to look after, the more they have to lose. If we can motivate ourselves to live simply, we can give up spending so much time looking after things.

Reflecting on our camping trip to Abel Tasmen, I came to the realization of how powerful this chapter is. I did not bring my Laptop, my I pod, my cell phone, or even my books and journal. I had nothing really to look after. It felt great to relax on the beach with my friends playing hacky sack and rugby. I was enjoying what I was doing at the moment, not worrying about knowing whether or not those items were in a safe place.

46. Nothing to win

This chapter motivates individuals to develop a leadership style that is content with whatever is happening. Rather than getting upset over what might be happening, or what they want to see happening but isn’t. To develop a mindset that nothing is to be won or lost in group work is healthy. A group needs to find unity and work together towards their goals. Wanting to be right all the time blind leaders of what is happening within the group. Conflicts will arise in any group; it’s what the group does with these energies that matters. The energies can become creative forces that help the group.

Our group occasionally gets snappy or grumpy with each other, especially when we are all low energy levels and hungry. We just need to remember, to step back and let things fall as they may. Rather than getting grumpy and interfering to make a point or say what we think might be better. We are here as a group and should make decisions as one.
